The Case Of The Stolen Idea

The amazing Allison @ House Of Hepworths sent us over this comment from her coffee filter lampshade:
You should give credit where credit is due. Liz Marie did this exact project 4 days ago.

The Slammed Blogger Says:
Oh snap. I just got told. If I had copied another blogger, I’m the 1st person that would give credit where credit is due. But thanks for assuming that A) I actually know who Liz is, B) assuming that I copied someone and didn’t give them credit.
I guarantee you I did not copy Liz. Gluing coffee filters to inanimate objects is not a brand new thing. We all assume we are the one to invent something when in reality, this lamp shade was probably invented 50 years ago.
I ALWAYS give credit to other bloggers. Always. I am not that person who rips someone off and pretends I invented it. But thanks for the accusation. I appreciate that.
Well, at least thanks for introducing me to a great blog. Liz’s blog seems like one I will enjoy reading. If I ever link to her I’ll make sure I give you full credit.
Also, I tried to email you privately about this, but your email address is FAKE. I’m sensing a troll?
Oh, one more thing… in my coffee filter wreath post TWO WEEKS AGO I wrote this at the end… “And I’ve got one more awesomely cool project in the works with the remainder of my 250 filters. Hopefully I’ll finish soon so I can show it off to you. ”
How can I copy someone before they even post about it?
Allison

Mandi Says:
HAHAHAHAHAHA! Can you come back to me after I compose myself please? HAHAHAHAHA

Viv Says:
"What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."  Ecclesiastes 1:9
"Thou shalt not use coffee filters for anything but making coffee; lo I deem that Liz has done it first."  The Wacky Commenter

I love how the commenter assumes that simply because she saw something, that thing is the Original Thing.  I don't want to delve into murky areas like narcissism or other personality disorders (cuz' attending the Snap Out Of It! school of thought does not qualify me to make psychological judgments...) but it seems to me that there is a sociopathic screw loose.  Alison, you keep on doing what you're doing.
(Just please try not to use paint, wood, glue, fabric, glitter, or coffee filters.  Oh!  Or burlap!....)

Mandi Says..Again:
Sorry cute girl but there is no way on this planet that Allison is going to check every blog ever created to see if someone has done this.  If she is like most she has no time to even read all the blogs in her reader let alone blogs that aren’t on her radar.  There are lots of creative bloggers out there and no idea is truly original…unless I come up with it.

"Two wrongs don't make a right. You are all bashing this woman and making fun of her."
Um, yes Karl.  We are making fun of her.  Your powers of observation are incredible.  I'm sure that with such keen perceptive skills, you have noticed that this blog's sole purpose is to "out" mean or rude comments; to let a little sunlight into the room, so to speak.  "Stealing" someone's idea is a hefty accusation... especially if That. Is. Not. What. Happened with Allison's lampshade.
So Karl:
Yay for using your name instead of "Anonymous"
Boo for being of the No-Reply Comment tribe and Boo for not having a profile so that we can contact you directly, as opposed to outing you here.

OH SNAP! You just got told!  And to the rest of you….can you see why I love this girl so dang much?

I laughed so much when Allison replied " I ever link to her I’ll make sure I give you full credit. "

I just found Allison's blog last night and commented on how I have to now re-do my lampshade I just did because hers was so awesome.. well I guess I should say Liz's is so awesome. So if I make this lampshade and post it on my blog I will be sure to thank Allison and Liz for the idea and then I'm going to google just to make sure I haven't forgotten to give credit to anyone else.

This is AH-MAZING on so many levels.

Thanks for making me smile. Allison just incase you were wondering the wheel, the phone and the chair were already invented. So if you decided to drive today, have a chat with someone or take a seat, make sure to give credit to those before you, mkay...

I feel about 10 pounds lighter, just reading this stuff...I did a project that I thought was semi-orginal, and come to find out, it was a project a follower of mine did like 5 mos ago..and I swear I never saw hers. I just chalk it up to great minds think alike, even if she and I are on different continents!!

House of Hepworths ROCKS! why would some send Allison such a crappy comment? OHMYGOSH, someone actually made a craft that another home crafter made first, GASP! the horror!! everyone in blog land needs to have a totally unique project that has NEVER been repeated before.

When I first started my blog I had this same exact thing happen. I felt really bad because I would never steal an idea - but then I went to the state fair and saw at least 3 vendors with the same exact thing - and I realized that I shouldn't feel bad and that ideas go around and around and no one should ever assume they thought of it first. I am sad that I feel like that ruined my relationship with that blogger because she has an awesome site.

This is SOOOOO my new favorite blog right now! LOL! I don't have enough people who actually comment on my blog let alone leave me a rude comment...but I think it is such a shame when people have to tear other's down just to make themselves feel better...and how cowardly to do it anonymously. I will have to share your blog on my blog. Thanks for some great laughs!

To assume Liz, who is a very talented crafter, just miraculously made up hot glueing things to other things is ridiculous. It's all been done before. So get off your high horse lady!
haa ha this is good.

Ok, so Heather (my sis) kept telling me that I needed to come over here and check out this hilarious new blog and can I just say OH MY GOODNESS!!! This is truly my favorite new place! We have had some interesting comments on our blog too, most of which come off as passive aggressive. I think you guys are beyond genius for creating this place for them to all come to die! :-)

OMG what did I ever do before I came across this blog... this just puts a smile on my face and gives me the BIGGEST belly laughs... I think people lose their minds behind the keyboards sometimes! lol

Hmmm. . . where to begin. Well, great biblical insight. If it's there, well then that's enough for me. We who think we are so original and brilliant. PHOEY! People have the same/similar ideas all the time. I mean, how many (fill in the blank) have you seen this week? Silly. Silly. Instead, Anonymous could have said, "That reminds me of what Liz did the other day. You should check it out." More tact!!!

Karl. Hmmm . . . Read the premise of the site? Not bashing, constructive criticism.

Hmm, so should I stop following all the blogs I do? Because the reason I follow them IS to get ideas... Should I just stop posting on my blog, in case someone else has made/said/thought the same thing I want to post about?
Oh and don't anyone dare make something with rosettes on it, lest you want to give credit to the 15,592,735 other blogs out there that have rosette crafts/projects on them.. Jeez.

Ashleigh@Sincerely said...

Oh my gosh. People are crazy! I made a coffee filter light. I should probably go take it down since I probably copied it haha.

Also I should probably stop using coffee filters every day to make coffee. Or I should link to this mysterious "Liz" every time I make a cup of coffee.

I once got bashed for blogging about a "crumpled paper garland". Even though I gave complete credit up front to the "original" blogger, and even linked to her website and Etsy, where she sells them (apparently, I was taking food out of her son's mouth). I mentioned how well priced they were, also. I then received a barrage of hate comments from all of her friends, ridiculous, awful comments. In the end it wasn't worth leaving the post up. It was CRUMPLED PAPER, after all!

I just made a coffee filter wreath, which I copied off a dress in the PS I Made This Book. It will likely be weeks til I actually have time to finish it, plus post about it. As if I'm going to take more time to google search every coffee filter wreath ever made?

Your commentary is hilarious... down to the Wonder Bra!

That happened to me... I once swirled frosting on a cake using my giant star tip on my frosting bag into rose-like mounds. Not exceptionally beautiful but it was quick and I got the job done just as my guests were walking into the house. I'd seen the technique lots of places and since I used to work as a professional cake decorator, it wasn't some sort of groundbreaking advancement in buttercream application.

A blogger left a comment on my post accusing me of copying her and not giving her credit - to her blog I've never laid eyes on - and her post was years ago but apparently she must spend her days ensuring that nobody copy her archives in any way, shape or form. Not to be outdone, she rallies up her regular readers to start making nasty comments on my blog... they went into my archives and left comments like "I wonder if this is original, or if it is another situation like when you copied from Blogger X"... huh? Like they were a small army of mercenaries protecting her intellectual investment. She is a much bigger blogger than I am so I won't say who she is but it really peeved me. I always give credit if I try something I've seen on another blog... can't two people ever have the same (kind of simple and unoriginal) idea?

I don't have anything to add to this conversation (it's all been said before!), except that I want all of you to be my new BFF's. You gals are hilarious!!
